The Art of Doing Nothing on Vacation

So much of travel is about “doing” things, zipping from place to place, checking off activities, and coming home more tired than when you left. That’s great a lot of the time. Still, sometimes what you really need is a day when you can just be. A Saona Island excursion delivered exactly that. It was a carefree day in a tropical paradise where nothing was required of us except to enjoy.

If you’re wondering where Saona is, it’s a stunning island just off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Many visitors to Saona Island from Punta Cana rave about it, and for good reason. It’s the perfect day trip when you want both adventure and relaxation.

Starting the Journey: From Punta Cana to Bayahibe

Our day began with a scenic ride from Punta Cana to Bayahibe, the fishing village known as the gateway to Saona. This was the starting point for our outing with Punta Cana Adventures. When we arrived, the beach buzzed with activity, including speed boats, fishing boats, and trailers all preparing for the day ahead.

Soon, we boarded a speedboat that carried us to our private catamaran. This would be our floating home for the day, ready to whisk us away toward Isla Saona.

Sailing Toward Isla Saona on a Catamaran Adventure

The catamaran exceeded all expectations. We sprawled out on nets above the turquoise waters, lounged on the open deck soaking up the sun, and admired 360-degree views of the Caribbean. Within minutes, the crew spoiled us with platters of fresh fruit and sandwiches. Of course, there was also an open bar complete with rum and champagne.

I found my favorite spot on the back deck, watching crystal-clear waters trail behind us as we headed toward paradise that is Saona Island.

A Stop at the Natural Pool

“The natural pool is open!” the crew shouted as the catamaran came to a halt. We had anchored in shallow, transparent waters just offshore from a perfect line of palm trees.

Here, the sea transformed into a giant blue lagoon, chest-deep and so clear that we could see starfish scattered across the sandy bottom. We swam, snorkeled, and floated in bliss while one of the crew passed around rum and Cokes right in the middle of the Caribbean.

Arriving at Saona Island

After our refreshing swim, it was time to continue to Saona. The island looked like it had been pulled from the pages of a travel magazine. There were white sands, turquoise water, and towering palms everywhere.

Saona, or Isla Saona in Spanish, is part of Cotubanamá National Park. This is a protected area that has preserved its pristine beauty. The scenery felt almost unreal, like Photoshop come to life on the picturesque Saona Island.

All-Inclusive Lunch on Your Saona Island Tour

By the time we reached the island, lunch was ready. A delicious buffet of salads, lobster, chicken, and vegetables awaited us. With cocktails in hand, we laughed, breathed in the salty air, and settled into beach chairs without a single worry.

The rest of the afternoon was pure leisure. We enjoyed swimming in gentle waves, napping under palms, and watching volleyball. We even bought fresh coconuts from local vendors. Nature lovers would also appreciate Saona’s wildlife, including iguanas, flamingos, and a turtle sanctuary. Some visitors venture to Mano Juan, a small fishing village known for its colorful wooden houses and laid-back charm.

Returning from Your Saona Island Tour to Punta Cana

All too soon, it was time to say goodbye to Saona. Thankfully, the return trip gave us one last chance to relax on the catamaran. Some tours even offer a sunset sailing option, making the farewell even more magical.

As we passed lush mangroves and cruised over the turquoise waters, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for this unforgettable Saona Island day.

Final Thoughts

For travelers seeking a balance of relaxation and adventure, Saona Island is a must. Whether you book a shared tour, a private charter, or even a VIP yacht, this full-day excursion from Punta Cana offers natural beauty, Caribbean charm, and total escape from daily life.

We were guests of the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, but all opinions on this relaxing, pristine paradise are entirely our own.
