Mamajuana A Drink You Must Try While You’re in Punta Cana

Is it true that the Mamajuana is well known as an aphrodisiac? YES, IT IS.

We the locals called the Dominican viagra. Someone recently inquired whether or not Mamajuana was available for export. Mama what, you ask? You know, the spiced rum that you may have had straight from the lid of its bottle on the street (oh, was that just me?), or perhaps as an after-dinner liqueur. Spiced with cinnamon, medicinal leaves, and herbs – among other things – it is a sweet, yet fiery concoction that will leave you breathless, maybe even a little “frisky”.

What Is Mamajuana? (Mama Juana)

This spiritual drink from my lovely Dominican Republic is made with rum, red wine, honey, to soak in a glass bottle with tree bark and herbs. On some excursions like Dune Buggies and Safari, you will have the chance to try this amazing drink. The drink evolved from its early form as an herbal tea prepared by the Taino Indians, which included water with various tree bark and herbs. In the post-Columbus era, alcohol was added to the recipe.

The mixture of bark, tree leaves, and herbs varies depending on the region. There are various versions of the drink including the following types of vegetation:

  • Anam· (Petiveria alliacea)
  • Anis Estrellado (Illicium verum)
  • Bohuco Pega Palo (Cissus verticillata)
  • Albahaca (Ocimum basilicum)
  • Canelilla (Cinnamodendron ekmanii)
  • Bojuco Caro (Princess Vine)
  • Marabeli (Securidaca virgata)
  • Clavo Dulce (Whole Clove)
  • Maguey (Agave spp.) leaves
  • Timacle (Chiococca alba)

Preparation:

There are many ways to prepare the Mamajuana another one but not less famous is the one prepared with seafood, cinnamon, gin, rum, honey, a stick called Brazil, and raisins. This last ingredient is the key and the reason why this drink became popular.

Don’t believe me, believe in my ancestors who are wiser than me.

Besides being an aphrodisiac drink, the Mamajuana is also consumed for its medicinal value such as Flu remedies, like a digestion and circulation aid, blood cleanser, and kidney and liver tonic. Interesting uh?

Mixtures using cinnamon are said to help stabilize blood sugar and help those suffering from diabetes. Cloves are said to help with painkilling. Honey has been a natural remedy for centuries and Dominicans believe it can help with the cure of flu and boost energy.

Strength – The combination of the dark rum known in the Dominican as Gasoline mixed with wine and soaked in the bark and herb mixture makes this drink very potent. It should only be ingested in small shots and you should limit the number of shots you have. Overconsumption of this beverage can lead to alcohol poisoning if too many shots are taken at one time.

Taking Mama Juana Home To The Us Or Canada – What You Need To Know.

Mama Juana is bottled in two ways. The first with just herbs and tree bark for you to take home and mix the rum and wine yourself and the second a ready-to-drink version that has been soaked and prepared for you.

Both US and Canadian customs do not permit the transport of Mama Juana if it is not in its liquid. If you take dry MamaJuana ingredients home with you, be warned, it may be confiscated by Customs. U.S. customs officials appear to be wise to the beverage and will ask you straight out if you are bringing back Mamajuana. Those with liquid versions are subject to the alcohol importing restrictions of their customs office but those with dry ingredients will be confiscated on the spot.
